Top 5 Rules of Thumb
Things to consider during your kitchen remodel.
Designing a kitchen from scratch has many advantages, you have the opportunity to balance form vs function. Working within the limitations of an existing kitchen requires some forethought but, there is a lot we can do with your space.
A great looking kitchen certainly will impress your friends and family, but will you dread the walk from counter to fridge? Oven to sink? Will the door open up in a odd location?. These are a few of the things you will need to consider before moving forward with that kitchen renovation, redesign or remodeling project.
We understand you will want to do your research, due diligent and investigative work to fully understand your options, this will give you the balance of form vs function for a long happy kitchen life.
The best case scenario is to have a beautiful kitchen that save you time and money when preparing your meals and yes, cleaning.
A kitchen that is designed properly with customer input will be a delight to work in and a safe environment.
How many rules does your existing kitchen violate?. For a better understanding of why it may seem awkward and hard to use, we posted the top 5 after doing our research.
While these guidelines are a good start, they are not set in stone, you know your habits better than we do, they do not substitute for competent kitchen design. Design encompasses these rules and much more. It's the "much more" part that gets novice designers in trouble.
A remodeled kitchen is a major investment, and not something you are going to want to do over again because the first design was not quite right. So, invest in a good design and spend the rest of your time enjoying it.
- Rule 1
Kitchen Entry Doors: Have minimum code requirements for size, must clear openings and counter tops, also you must consider maneuvering after the door is open and entry is made. Cabinets have doors also, be aware of these as well. Considering these things becomes even more important during a remodel, existing space must be utilized carefully, thinking outside the box and looking ahead at how your family utilizes the space will save you headaches later.
- Rule 2
Considering your work stations: Activity centers or anywhere you prep food, prepare meals and plate the hot food. In a kitchen with three activity centers the sum of the three traveled distances should total no more than 26' with no single leg of the triangle measuring less than 4 feet nor more than 9 feet. Its a common standard we found doing our research and is a guide, consider your needs above all else and try to forget the excitement of your freshly remodeled kitchen and consider function over form. Ideally each appliance that is used more frequently should be 4 - 5 ft apart for an open and workable space but not more than 9-10 feet. The more frequently the item is used, the close you want them together.
- Rule 3
Separate your work stations / activity centers: Utilizing your space is critical, separating work centers will help you plan the use of your cabinet space and drawers. If you spend a great deal of time in your kitchen you will appreciate having everything you need for cooking as close to the oven or stove as possible, if you have someone cooking for you, they will love that you thought ahead, you may even want to consider having them consult with your kitchen remodeling company, they can provide insight that you may over look.
- Rule 4
Walking space for how many people?: Consider how many people will be walking in your kitchen, how many will be sitting standing etc. Make sure the aisle are wide enough to accommodate your needs, ask you consultant if you need help, he can answer your questions.
- Rule 5
Clean up and food prepping: Planning ahead on the quantity of food you will be prepping, depth of your sink for clean up, 1 sink or 2. Engineering a kitchen can be well thought out in advance. Counter space is an obvious consideration, but more is not always best. If you spend very little time prepping a cooking large meals and you mostly eat from the fridge, you may be better off with a larger refrigerator than more counter space.
